Sharks, Critters and Inmates, and We Just Got Here

Welcome to Kamp Klamath Campground. I sure know how to pick 'em.

Just a couple miles from here, Douglas, who checked us into Kamp Klamath, watched a great white shark twirl a seal in the air and then gulp it right down. We don't need to tell you we won't be straying from the beach.

Only two other RVs appear to be in use here, and 2 others aside from them squat nearby. The campground is quiet, rustic, densely treed so, naturally, my first question was, "Are there bears here?"

"Oh, yes," says one of two men staying in the campground, "But those aren't the critters I'm afraid of."

Huh.

"Kittycats," he says. He seesaws his hands like giant paws.

"Cougars," I say.

"Yeah. And a lot of 'em."

This man, three sites down from us, is a firefighter so, inherently, we felt a little safer, for all of 3 seconds. You see, he has an "unusual job" in that he "runs an inmate firefighting crew". And he doesn't have to commute far, "They're just at the top of the road, not 2 1/2 miles away."

Huh.

Well, that's not enough to deter us - we have plenty of bear spray... Besides, Highway 199, winding back and forth between ancient trees crowding the road is just an introduction to the beauty and magnificence that await us in the Redwood National Park.

We hope you'll check back to view our photos and read about our adventures.

Peace,

-P

P.S. - There will be some "backposting" in the next week or so. We wouldn't want you to miss out on those Oregon highlights.
