Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin!
March 15, 2009
In celebration of Darwin Day (on or around February 12, the birthday anniversary of the most famous English naturalist), a Las Cruces playwright wrote and hosted a church service in recognition of Darwin's contributions to science. The hymns, though familiar in harmony, accommodated scientific celebrations, according to the Church of Evolution.
The not-so-reverend Bob sang, gave science lessons, and even sold t-shirts with the following blurb below Darwin's mug: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you! You descended from a hairy, tailed quadruped, probably arboreal in its habits. And you proved we did to!
Not-so-reverend Bob says, "Evolution is not a competing deity. Evolution has no intelligence or personality as it is a natural process. Evolution is merely a means of describing observable phenomenon. The same holds true for Natural Selection. Though many hold that there is no meaning without a divine creator, no morality, no purpose nor reason to live, I do not believe this to be the case. I have found that there is a deep richness to living that is only enhanced by an understanding of Evolution -- an understanding of how we were really created." Curious about Bob?
