Oak Island Treasure Mystery?

Saturday, July 31, 2010 - Mahone Bay, NS

Mystery has surrounded the "Money Pit" on Oak Island for over a 100 years. We were curious and since this was the first tour since 1995 we decided to expand our imagination and join the 2-hour guided walk.

Below is a cross section of the "Money Pit."

Being skeptical by nature, I remain unconvinced, you will have to ask the others for their opinion. -L

Ironworks Distillery

Tour of Nova Scotia - July 29, 2010 - Lunenburg, NS

Our friend Deb Beers introduced us last November to Pierre Guevremont and Lynne MacKay who had just purchased the old Lunenburg Ironworks building on the corner of Kempt and Montague streets and were in the process of turning this historic building into a distillery. We were priviledged to a private tour of the distillery in the works. They were worried that the building inspector would not let them keep the original rough worn floors. But when we visited today six weeks after their grand opening. The Ironworks Distillery greets you with a large German still in the back corner.

The old forge and wooden floors add to the atmosphere.

When you come to Lunenburg stop by the Distillery for a tasting. We left with bottles of Apple Vodka and Cranberry Liqueur. -l

Arrival in Lunenburg

Arrived in Lunenburg and Cheryl Corkum from the Visitor's Center was helpful in getting us sites together (13 & 14) in the corner overlooking the back harbour. We went to Salt Shaker for lunch and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine over looking the harbour.

After touring around town, we drove out to Blue Rocks to enjoy the sun setting over the fish shacks.

Later we dropped by the Ice House to listen to Paul, Eilidh, and Anne play Celtic music on guitar and fiddles. Jay had to eat slow since he was only allowed to stay as long as he was eating, because he was underage.

We look forward to seeing Paul and Eilidh playing again next week as a part of the Folk Harbour Music Festival. -L

Tour of Nova Scotia with the Faires Family

Saturday, July 24, 2010 - Fundy National Park

Today we left Maine and crossed into Nova Scotia with Eric, Debbie, and Jay Faires following in their 2003 Prevost Liberty Lady Classic bus. You may remember we stayed with the Faires' at their bus barn in Huntsville, TN from November 25- December 2, 2009 to celebrate US Thanksgiving and do some bus maintenance. They are fellow POG members and we enjoy traveling with them. Debbie visited here years ago and Eric, who is an Iron But Rally Motorcycle finisher. He rode 11,000 miles in 11 days. Jay there thirteen old son is a musical prodigy who plays like Eric Clapton. We planned a year ago to tour NS and they asked to come along. Pamela has spent a month scheduling our three week tour which will include a stay in Lunenburg for the Classic Boat Festival and Folk Harbour Festival, Louisbourg Fortress, Cabot Trail and Cape Breton, and much more. We will try to post on a regular basis throughout the tour.

Today we arrived at the Fundy National Park after crossing the border at St. Stephens. Our campsite over-looked the shore. We walked out on the bay at low tide and then sat up on cliff and enjoyed wine and cheese while the tide came back in. Jay posted a time-lapsed video of the incoming tide here. -L

We arrived just in time for low tide.

We must've walked almost a half mile to reach the water's edge.

It was mucky and slow going save for the barnacle crusted rocks here and there. I think Debbie and I have perfected the barnacle ballet.

Scallop shells.

Alma Harbour, "Home of the Highest Tides in the World", at low tide.

We watched the tide come in until it consumed the final sand bar, but you can see it move 2000 times faster in Jay's The Tide video Lloyd mentioned above.

We're having a fantastic time!
